Richard Heinberg

Richard Heinberg is the author of eight books including The Party’s Over: Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies (New Society, 2003, 2005), Powerdown: Options and Actions for a Post-Carbon World (New Society, 2004), The Oil Depletion Protocol (New Society, 2006), and Peak Everything (New Society, 2007). He is a Senior Fellow of Post Carbon Institute and is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost Peak Oil educators. He writes a regular column for The Ecologist, and has also authored scores of essays and articles that have appeared in such journals as The American Prospect, Public Policy Research, Quarterly Review, Z Magazine, Resurgence, The Futurist, European Business Review, Earth Island Journal, Alternative Press Review, and The Sun; and on web sites such as www.Alternet.org, www.EnergyBulletin.net, www.GlobalPublicMedia.com, www.ProjectCensored.com, and www.Counterpunch.com. He has appeared in numerous video documentaries, including Leonardo DiCaprio's 11th Hour.

Energy crises are not new; every time a species runs out of an energy source, populations decline to sustainable levels. With booming population growth and dwindling supply of the most powerful energy supply in the history of mankind, our time has come.

That sinking feeling that so many of us live with (even through the holidays) might be simply a deeper understanding that what we see around us -- this fairytale culture of consumption you and I have created -- is a system that is burning up all we have left.

Alternative fuels and new technology can keep up some of our lifestyle, but all combined can not come close to giving us what oil gives us, meaning a drastic change of lifestyle is unavoidable.

Check out some of these select links, and google whatever from there. For every argument, read its counter argument and ala Fox News, you decide!

Then talk about it. With your friends, family… you'll have to ruffle feathers, as this is something no one wants to hear. Truth through uncomfortable discussion is essential.

Feel free to discuss what you've learned below, or write angry rants of denial.
