WELCOME

Let's face it. Our world is in deep, deep trouble and we are the "troublemakers." We have to make real, difficult changes yesterday.

Despite the obvious benefits, we are not going to recycle, compost, or talk our way out of this.

Small is beautiful

Our leaders, being politicians, are not leaders at all but are bound to be followers, who just won't be there for us in a crisis. So, it's up to me and you to make the choice of becoming responsible stewards of the earth.

Let's turn the world right side up as demonstrated through this website. Join us on our journey towards a sustainable present and future. Let's walk the path to freedom!

OUR MISSION

Just look around. When there are millions upon millions on the same road, they are on the crowded freeway of life, going Nowhere but travelling with plenty of company. Leading to life's Summit is the way which only the very few travel-the Path - Jules Dervaes

Path to Freedom strives to inspire individuals to "think globally, act locally" by motivating them to live a simpler and more fulfilling life on the path to eco-stewardiship.

Our travels can never be over; it is an entire life’s journey and we have many more miles to go. However, we are proving that we can attain our goal if we advance in stages whatever the circumstances. Our hope is that by documenting our personal experiences we can offer encouragement to those who are on the same journey towards a simple, self-sufficient lifestyle.

The ultimate goal is to live as simply as possible in harmony with nature and ourselves. A back-to-basics lifestyle that will re-establish us to the land, healing the disconnection of our lives and leading to the restoration of the earth.

Part of Path to Freedom's mission is to educate individuals and families to integrate sustainable living practices and methods into their daily lives. Our focus is on: organic gardening, permaculture, solar cooking, composting and other back-to-basic, sustainable technologies and practices relating to the home environment.

VISION

Nothing less than a revolution is required in order for man to achieve the realization of his human potential. The future will be one of tremendous struggle because the world has been held captive. It is time to rise up to break out of this bondage. VICTORY can only be won by those armed with "plowshares." When the land is liberated, the people will be; when the people are liberated the nation will be. And, one nation--truly, fully liberated-will lead the world to real freedom!

--------------------
We need to go beyond the fragmented and narrow band-aid solutions
--------------------

It is time to move beyond the unsustainable, unfulfilling, mainstream culture. We need to research WHOLE solutions, doing more than reduce, reuse and recycle, going beyond the fragmented and narrow band-aid solutions which postpone consequences for a time but don’t change anything permanently, especially ourselves, the source of the problems.

As the world faces ever increasing danger based on its dysfunctional system, there is a critical need to look ahead with a new vision, a vision which sees that a step backwards is progress. With the severe shortage of hand-to-mouth workers only getting worse, we intend to use our hands, to employ them as weapons of mass creation.

The family’s mission will be to continue acquiring the total package of brains, skills and guts necessary to become the survivors.

The future is now, the choice is ours.

ABOUT PATH TO FREEDOM

Front Yard - Our 'Garden of Eden'

"We do not make any profit from this venture - we only seek to educate and inform"

Founded by Jules Dervaes (Dur-VAYS) in 2001, Path to Freedom is a grassroots, family operated, viable urban homesteading project established to promote a simpler and more fulfilling lifestyle and reduce one family's "footprint" on the earth's dwindling resources.

Since the mid 1980s, all five members of the Dervaes family have steadily worked at transforming their ordinary city lot in Pasadena, California, into an organic permaculture garden supplying them with food all year round. They also run a successful business, Dervaes GardensRead More, providing salad greens to local restaurants. This helps them fund their purchases of solar panels, energy efficient appliances, and biodiesel processor to further decrease their homestead's reliance on the earth’s non-renewable resources.

What is unique and makes PathtoFreedom.comRead More different from other sustainable living sites on the Internet? The Dervaes family isn’t just writing about the latest eco-practices or products that should be incorporated into their lives. Instead, they are sharing with you the changes and steps to sustainability they already have implemented in their lifestyle.

Furthermore, you, the readers, can "visit" the family daily at their journal and witness their first-hand accounts of struggles and joys, defeats and successes, as they journey along the path to self-sufficiency to accomplish more.

It is the family’s hope and desire to live by example as they strive to become earth stewards on a journey towards a sustainable world.

"This project evolved from our commitment and conviction to live a simple, self-sufficient and holistic lifestyle," says Jules Dervaes, founder, "It is an entire life's journey and we have many more miles to go--the journey is by no means over! We are proving that we can attain our goal if we advance in stages whatever the circumstances. Our hope is that by documenting our personal experiences we can offer encouragement to those who are on the same journey towards a simple, self-sufficient lifestyle whether they are in the city or country."

DERVAES INSTITUTE

Through the Dervaes Institute founded in 2006 as a legacy for his father, Jules Dervaes and his family's mission is to expand Path to Freedom's worldwide outreach program, which will provide sustainable solutions in the present and for future generations, honoring the legacy of Jules Dervaes, Sr.

OUTREACH PROGRAM

PathtoFreedom.com is designed, created, operated, and maintained and by members of the Dervaes family. The family operates the website as a non-commercial, home-based effort with no commercial advertising. They are committed to maintaining this site as an ad and commercial free sanctuary.
We do not make any profit from this venture - we only seek to educate and inform.

This site documents the daily struggles and triumphs and seasonal activities of Path to Freedom with additional links and resources about environmental issues and sustainable living. Recently, Path to Freedom has been open to the public for tours and educational workshops.

In addition, the Dervaes family participates in a number of events and festivals. The project is slowly becoming legendary worldwide and has attracted local and national media attention, including television, magazine, and newspaper coverage.

WEB STATISTICS

The website continues to grow. As of 2006, the site receives over 75,000 unique visitors a month/3,000,000 hits from over 100 countries.

FUNDING

While Path to Freedom's urban homestead has enjoyed widespread recognition, only the earth stewardship outreach activities of Path to Freedom receive outside tax deductible funding through the Dervaes Institute Path to Freedom itself strives to be a true, working homestead model not just a showcase.

Path to Freedom strives to be a true, working homestead model not just a showcase.

Projects that the Dervaes family have undertaken in the past and plan to accomplish in the future are self funded with the earnings of their produce business and savings.

The homestead operates a viable home business. Path to Freedom does not depend on tours, teaching, writing books, lectures, memberships, grants, donations or consulting fees.

THE URBAN HOMESTEAD

"The homestead's productive garden now grows over 6,000 lbs of organic produce annually"

At Path to Freedom, the Dervaes family has steadily transformed their ordinary city lot in Pasadena, California, into an integral urban homestead. And, along the way, they are striving to become earth stewards, taking care of the precious gift we all have been given.

These eco-pioneers regard their 1/5 acre urban homestead as a sustainable living resource center where they are setting out to live by example while also inspiring others to "just do it!"

Their objective is to live as sustainably and self-sufficiently as possible in an urban environment in harmony with nature and each other, while also inspiring others to "think globally, act locally." Their homestead supports four adults, who live and work full time on a 66’ x 132’ city lot (1/5 acre).
The homestead's productive garden now grows over 6,000 lbs of organic produce annually

The yard has over 350 varieties of edible and useful plants. The homestead's productive 1/10 acre organic garden now grows over 6,000 pounds (3 tons) of produce annually. This provides fresh vegetables and fruit for the family’s vegetarian diet and a source of income.

The family operates a viable and lucrative home business, Dervaes Gardens, that supplies area restaurants and caterers with salad mix, edible flowers, heirloom variety tomatoes and other in-season vegetables. The income earned from produce sales offsets operating expenses and is invested in appropriate technologies, such as solar panels, energy efficient appliances, and biodiesel processor, to further decrease our homestead’s reliance on the earth’s non-renewable resources.

Over the years, by purchasing energy efficient appliances and using electricity conservatively, the modern homesteaders have cut their energy usage in half. Solar panels have reduced their dependence on electricity by two-thirds and have furthered their goal of energy independence. A solar oven is used to cook food on sunny days. And during the summer of 2005, the family built a cob oven, which is fueled by scraps of wood and twigs to create an energy source for cooking breads, pizzas, desserts, etc.

In 2003, the Dervaeses constructed a biodiesel processor from a discarded hot water heater, which enables them to brew low emissions biodiesel (a renewable, nontoxic, biodegradable replacement for petrol diesel) from used vegetable oil to fuel their diesel Suburban, reducing the vehicle's air toxins by 90%.

In addition, these urban farmers share their homestead with a menagerie of animals -- chickens, ducks, two rescued cats, red wiggler worms (which compost garbage) and two goats (Nigerian Dwarf and a Pygmy goat.

All the animals are treated with love, care and respect and full attention is given to their comfort and needs. Each breed is carefully researched and selected to fit into our urban homestead lifestyle and housing arrangements are designed for the animals' preferences and needs but with unique, space saving innovations. The family is vegetarian and none of the animals are raised for meat related purposes.

Future projects on the "to do list" are the installation of a greywater reclamation system, composting toilet, and a cistern to capture and store rainwater, which would dramatically reduce the use of precious water.

Through the implementation of a series of simple steps, a homegrown revolution has evolved.

You can follow the ups and downs of the family's journey, share in their successes and failures and peek into their every day lives by visiting the frequently updated urban homestead journal Read More

WHO WE ARE

IN A NUTSHELL

Since the mid '80s, Jules Dervaes and his sons and daughters have steadily worked away at transforming an ordinary city lot in Pasadena, California into an integral urban homestead.

On this 1/5 acre urban homestead we have set out to live by example and inspire others to do the same. We are striving to be a sustainable homestead complete with solar energy, waste water management, growing our own food, and more.

Our family shares the homestead with a menagerie of chickens, ducks, goats and a crazy trio of rescued cats.

THE PIONEERS

The one small garden of a free gardener was all his need and due, not a garden swollen to a realm; his own hands to use, not the hands of others to command.

~ J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings) ~

JULES DERVAES

Originally from Tampa, Florida, Jules attended Loyola University, New Orleans in 1965. While studying there, he became increasingly disillusioned with the American way of life.

After graduating in 1969 with a B.S. in Math and a minor in Computer Science, he began a search for a more meaningful and service-oriented lifestyle...

BACKGROUND: THE MAN

The long & winding road..

Throughout my adult life, I’ve always been conscious about the environment and what we should do to reduce our impact on the earth. One of my motivations was the belief that you may not be able to change the world, but you can at least change your footprints on this earth. ~ Jules Dervaes ~

THE PAST

Originally from Tampa, Florida, Jules Dervaes (Dur-VAYS) graduated from Jesuit High School as valedictorian and was awarded a full academic scholarship to Loyola University in New Orleans in 1965. While studying there, he became increasingly disillusioned with the American way of life. After graduating in 1969 with a B. S. in Math and a minor in Computer Science, he began a search for a more meaningful and service-oriented lifestyle.

His first step took him to the University of Oregon where he enrolled in graduate school as part of his training as a VISTA volunteer. This avenue of service was abruptly terminated when his local draft board refused to grant him a deferment during the Vietnam War.

...What do I need? ... I want less and less. If I am alive and learning, what more? I need to learn how to grow food...(read more: http://www.pathtofreedom.com/insights/archives/1973/01/index.html) - Jules Dervaes, 1973
-----------------------

As a conscientious objector, he decided to serve others through teaching. Ultimately, this career choice gave him keener insight into the futility of America's future and its inability to nurture the human spirit. As a teacher, he saw first-hand the lack of character development in some students who were to be our country's next generation of parents.

New Zealand, 1973

Convinced that there must be a better society and more humane way of life somewhere, Jules backpacked through Europe as he considered the future course for his life. In 1973 he immigrated to New Zealand, believing that an isolated, egalitarian society could assist him and his family in living a more integrated, meaningful life.

In a "backwards" region on the west coast of New Zealand's rural South Island { New Zealand homestead photos Read More }, Jules embarked on the path towards self-sufficiency and began his homesteading journey.

He became a beekeeper, grew his own food, kept chickens, ducks and goats, collected rain water for his family’s water supply and lived without most modern conveniences.

But through a series of events, circumstances eventually brought Jules and his young family back to Tampa in 1975 where they lived on 10 acres in the country surrounded by pastures and orange groves. In this new location, Jules re-established his beekeeping business, started a lawn maintenance business and resumed gardening while sometimes teaching at local schools.

HERITAGE

Jules credits his father, the late Jules Dervaes Sr. and his ancestors for instilling in him the love of growing plants in his early years and for laying the foundation for his unique growing techniques and methods. In their homeland, Belgium, the Dervaes family owned and operated a well-known nursery and landscape business called "Dervaes Pepiniers" (no longer in existence).

However, ornamentals, roses, and floral plants were the Dervaes specialty, not fruit trees, vegetables, and berries. As a result, Jules ended up knowing and understanding very little about gardening for food production. In addition, as a youth, he was encouraged to pursue a conventional academic path in life to prepare for the corporate world, far away from the Dervaes landscape heritage.

Jules' paternal grandparents, Arthur Dervaes and Rochelle Van Wesepoel immigrated to Florida from Belgium in 1902. Arthur Dervaes had received a degree in Horticulture from the University of Paris and was a landscape specialist for the Tampa Electric Company. Jules' father, a Standard Oil executive, was also an active gardener and his yard in Florida was a lush jungle of tropical ornamentals, oaks, and palms. He was widely regarded for his beautiful crotons which he propagated himself.

AND NOW

In 1984 the family made another move, this time to Pasadena, California, where Jules re-entered college and achieved an additional degree in theology. While residing in Pasadena he continued hobby gardening and beekeeping in varying degrees over the years.

Meanwhile, even while working self-employed in lawn-maintenace, Jules began to develop leather craftsmanship skills { JulesDervaes.com handcrafts Read More}. He soon progressed from patterns and kits to designing and creating. Together with his two sons, Jules created a unique line of quality products which were featured in various Old Towne Pasadena stores and in other establishments throughout the area.

-------------------------
...Rather than waste precious time thinking about where we would like to be ... we would make a go of it with what we had. (more "Insights" http://pathtofreedom.com/insights)
-------------------------

Nonetheless, Jules still longed for the simpler life and the dependence on the land he had in New Zealand. He planned to "one day" return to that lifestyle and recreate what he had lost. Acquiring the acreage to rebuild that dream proved to be difficult, however. Circumstances, situations, and distractions continually thwarted attempts of a return to country life. And so, Jules and his family continued to dream of "one day" finding "freedom" by returning to the land.

But the Y2K alert and the growing threat of GMO foods was the final spark that propelled Jules to strive to become self-reliant where he presently lived. Not waiting for those dreams of acreage to become reality, Jules' and his family's goal was to incorporate sustainable skills and practices in an urban environment and to challenge themselves to push the limits with back-to-basic innovation. It was with the thought of "just how self-sufficient can we become in an urban environment?", that Jules and his family began recording their progress.

Thus, in 1999 the seeds of Path to Freedom, a public urban homestead model, were germinated.

Path to Freedom is breaking new ground every year. The tangible results (tasteful and beautiful, also) are evidence of the remarkable success of Dervaes' simple, practical and sensible philosophy.

This project, which began documentation of a single family striving to change their lives, has inspired and changed other peoples' lives around the world.

In 2006, Dervaes Institute was founded as a registered California Corporation Sole with 508(c)(1)(A) tax exempt status, dedicated to educating and helping others through outreach and support and is the foundation on which the Dervaes family will build the structure of their future plans. It stands as a living legacy and memorial to Jules C. Dervaes Sr. who lived by his philosophy: "if you cease to learn, you cease to exist."

THE FAMILY

Jules is the father of two sons and two daughters who he raised as a single parent after his divorce in 1989. Meet Jules' sons and daughters: Anais, Justin, Jeremy and Jordanne - Read More: http://www.pathtofreedom.com/about/background/family.shtml

These home schooled self-proclaimed "misfits" grew up with their hands (and feet!) in the soil. From an early age - even before most realized the legacy that was in their heritage - gardening had became a natural part of their lives.

Influenced by their circumstances and possessing a love of nature and a concern for the environment, these young Dervaes' share similar goals and interests but each with uniquely different talents and "specialties"...

BACKGROUND: THE FAMILY

Many times we receive emails with people asking "who are you folks?" There have been requests to see photos of the family and read more about us.

And they are right. There is very little information about the Dervaes Family on this website and even less photos of the family members and it's because we've always been camera shy. We love taking photos but somehow the people get left out.

We also strongly believe the attention should be on the project, the goals, the accomplishments, and the work ... not the people.

But we also understand how it is to connect here are very, very brief profiles of each of the family members.

ANAIS

Although born in an abandoned gold mining town on the west coast of the south island of New Zealand, Anaïs grew up on 10 acres in central Florida. She enjoyed planting a garden with her father, jumping from haybales, eating oranges from nearby orange groves and drinking raw goat's milk from Molly Jo, a pet. She's passionate about knitting, cooking, herbs, flowers and gardening. One day she hopes to return her country roots and live in a community of like minded folks.

JUSTIN

As the biodiesel specialist in the family, Justin has brewed hundreds of gallons of waste vegetable oil. He has a green thumb and is passionate about growing and propagation -- too passionate sometimes! When not in the garden or whenever his face is not immersed in seed catalogs, he enjoys tinkering with bikes, helping the kids in the neighborhood fix their bikes, and leathercrafting. He hopes to one day have more acreage to grow even more plants.

JORDANNE

Animals are one of her many passions, adopting and finding good homes for strays that happened to come in her life. She’s recently taken up guitar and has pretty much self-taught herself. She loves spending time in the kitchen whipping up delicious desserts. She hopes to one day have room enough to holistically raise and preserve heirloom poultry and stock.

IN GRATITUDE

We have a lot of people to thank for making this project possible - relatives and friends. ( view our "Thank You" list Read More )

But our greatest gratitude is to those who came before us -- especially to Jules Dervaes Sr., a man who had a profound impact in our lives.

Jules Sr. inspired within us a love of plants and the stewardship of the earth. His passion for cultivating and caring for living things was evident in his surroundings. Over the years, he slowly transformed his large typical Florida grass lawn into a tropical paradise.

Numerous colorful crotons made up a large part of his landscaping, along with jatrophas, caladiums, pepperomias, gingers, bromeliads, crinums, camellias, copper leaf, dwarf oleander and borders of liriope, roses, daylilies, bougainvillea, mallow, purple queen and striped spider plants.

Nearly an acre of winding paths crisscrossed his luscious and picturesque landscape of shade oaks and ornamentals.

He gardened naturally without the use of chemicals and garden work was always done by hand without the assistance of fancy powered tools.

Jules Sr. was proud to "not use a drop of fertilizer," depending instead on the organic matter and the original soil. And with an interest in conserving water he would carefully dig recesses in the soil along the concrete curbing to allow water to soak in instead of running off.

Sound familiar?

His passion primarily lay in cultivating the beautiful croton plants and would spend hours propagating them by air-layering a scraped limb with wet sphagnum moss wrapped in foil.

He created his own varieties of crotons with amazing traffic-stopping colors and shapes. Although he would willingly sell or give away his beautiful creations, he often lost many of his plants to thieves in the middle of the night.

Besides gardening, fishing was another favorite pastime. And, in this too, he would eschew the modern technological tools, relying instead on learning the language of the Bay with its moods and signs. He would spend hours in the waters of Tampa Bay. Over the years, his knowledge of every nook and cranny was immense. Soon, other fishermen would follow Jules Sr. or watch where he went because he knew where the best fishing spots were in the Tampa Bay area.

He never missed an opportunity to pass on his wisdom to his children and grandchildren. Jules Sr. was a true family man who provided well for his family and was always there to give counsel and guidance.

His words of advice as a Father and Grandfather conveyed his character, honesty, integrity, what he stood for and what he valued in life. He believed deeply in family, country and God.

His parents had immigrated to Florida from Belgium in 1902. During World War II, he served his country in the Army ( Jules C. Dervaes Sr. National WWII Memorial Registry Read More ) where he was dispatched to Europe with his artillery battalion.

During his military service, he found his future wife in Belgium, the homeland of his parents and after the war, he returned to American on a tramp steamer with his new bride. They had six children together in 50 years of marriage.

Jules Sr. was a modest man but one who took pride in doing everything to the best of his ability.

Over the course of his corporate career, he worked his way up from humble beginnings to become division manager for Chevron (formally of Standard Oil Co. of Kentucky) for 41 years.

A lifelong resident of Tampa and a graduate of Plant High School, he attended the University of Tampa and was a civic leader in the city. He was a former chairman for the Florida Petroleum Council and past president of Tampa Oil Men's Club.

He was a member of Desk & Derrick Club, Travelers Aid, Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce, Committee of 100, Tampa Citizens Safety Council, Kiwanis Club of Tampa, University Club of Tampa, St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, Jesuit High School Foundation and was a former counselor at The University of Tampa and Tampa Bay Vocational-Technical Center.

He is often remembered by friends, family and strangers alike for his love of life and for his amazing sense of humor and readiness to laugh and tease.

IN LOVING MEMORY

...You should always cast your eyes toward tomorrow. Sharpen your vision. Never be guided by the principle "everybody's doing it..." ~ Jules Dervaes Sr, 1977~

The Dervaes Institute is founded as a legacy to the Father and Grandfather we knew and loved. Our hope is that we will honor his memory and that his legacy will live in each of our hearts and be reflected in our actions.

We are indebted to Jules Sr. because he dedicated himself and gave us a strong foundation on which to build our future.

We can learn from his life. As he often reminded us, "if you cease to learn, you cease to exist."

TOURING

We regret that tours have been suspended until further notice. As our project gained recognition, we began to receive many requests for tours until it was no longer feasible for us to allow visitors due to time restraints. We are currently involved in home construction, the redesigning of the yard for better gardening efficiency, and the development of new sustainable projects to be implemented into the urban homestead which would further reduce our dependency on the "system."

----------------------------

We are deeply apologetic for not being able to share the homestead with others at this point and while we desire to promote the cause, we are a viable, working homestead - not a showplace that depends on income from tours to make our living. The time taken out for tours is time away from our work, which means decreased production from the garden and lost time for projects around the homestead. We want our place to become an educational tool but the sacrifice of time at this point is too great.

Note: If you really want to see our homestead and talk with us, we recommend you to sign up for one of our scheduled events http://pathtofreedom.com/outreach/index.shtml that are held in our backyard and converted garage area. Also, we do occasionally make special exceptions for grade school students on field trips. Contact us http://www.pathtofreedom.com/form/tours.htm to see if your school applies.
